These, along with the widespread use of sugar or honey, gave many dishes a sweet-sour flavor. Common seasonings in the highly spiced sweet-sour repertory typical of upper-class medieval food included verjuice, wine and vinegar in combination with spices such as black pepper, saffron and ginger. Social norms also dictated that the food of the working class be less refined, since it was believed there was a natural resemblance between one's labor and one's food manual labor required coarser, cheaper food.Ī type of refined cooking developed in the late Middle Ages that set the standard among the nobility all over Europe. Aside from economic unavailability of luxuries such as spices, decrees outlawed consumption of certain foods among certain social classes and sumptuary laws limited conspicuous consumption among the nouveau riche. As each level of society imitated the one above it, innovations from international trade and foreign wars from the 12th century onwards gradually disseminated through the upper middle class of medieval cities. Because of this, the food of the nobility was more prone to foreign influence than the cuisine of the poor it was dependent on exotic spices and expensive imports. Slow transportation and food preservation techniques (based exclusively on drying, salting, smoking and pickling) made long-distance trade of many foods very expensive. Cod and herring were mainstays among the northern populations dried, smoked or salted they made their way far inland, but a wide variety of other saltwater and freshwater fish was also eaten. The most prevalent butcher's meats were pork, chicken and other domestic fowl beef, which required greater investment in land, was less common. Meat was more expensive and therefore more prestigious and in the form of game was common only on the tables of the nobility. (Phaseolus beans, today the "common bean," were of New World origin and were introduced after the Columbian Exchange in the 16th century.) Fava beans and vegetables were important supplements to the cereal-based diet of the lower orders. Barley, oat and rye among the poor, and wheat for the governing classes, were eaten as bread, porridge, gruel and pasta by all members of society. Cereals remained the most important staples during the early Middle Ages as rice was a late introduction to Europe and the potato was only introduced in 1536, with a much later date for widespread usage. During this period, diets and cooking changed less across Europe than they did in the briefer early modern period that followed, when those changes helped lay the foundations for modern European cuisine. "Medieval cuisine includes the foods, eating habits, and cooking methods of various European cultures during the Middle Ages, a period roughly dating from the 5th to the 15th century. The hotel has a nice enough beach and a better one is in front of the next resort along, which is only a 5-10 minute walk through the mangrove trail. Added bonus was that we were 2 minutes walk from the Hilltop Reserve (see below for more). We got the best of both worlds in Villa 44, which was completely secluded but had good views of the ocean from the main level but also the limestone islands from the upstairs open air lounge area. The villas are great and depending on what you want you can choose from extremely secluded with not much view all the way to glorious 180 degree views of the bay and limestone islands. The open air cinema a good idea in principle, but I have a tendency to be liked by mosquitos more than the average person, so I cannot say I enjoyed it all that much. The 12 hour per day free ice cream parlour is an excellent touch, as are the home made jams and cakes. Breakfast is great and offers a wide range of Wester and Asian options. Resort restaurants are excellent and we mostly stuck to Thai food (plus the odd late night burger). My wife also really enjoyed the spa (not my thing so didn't try it myself). Do also go to the town for a lunch or dinner, there are a few nice restaurants. You can do it with normal scooters, but you will probably struggle to get to some of the more remote areas, such as the long beach at the north west of the island,as the roads are pretty bad in places. We also rented a quad bike and went around the island. Definitely recommend both the mangrove kayak trip (Sharif our guide was brilliant) as well as the local islands tour (though note that the main one or most popular among the local islands is a tad crowded). We had a mix of chilling out and activities. We were initially placed in a villa that was somewhat exposed and when we explained we wanted something more secluded, she immediately moved us to the most remote and sheltered property we could have hoped for. Anne (pronounced Annie), our GEM, was just brilliant! Attentive and always available, while making sure she gave us the privacy we wanted. It emphasizes breaking every chain that binds our minds and casting aside any burdens that hinder our healing and freedom. The pre-chorus speaks to the freedom we have in Christ and affirms the declaration of healing in Jesus' name. The lyrics also highlight our authority as believers to be strong and made strong through His power. It reminds us that our healing is not based on our own efforts but on the finished work of Christ. The opening verse of the song declares the truth that we are healed through the stripes Jesus bore on His back. It reminds us that our healing is not dependent on our own efforts but on the finished work of Christ. His wounds have brought us healing and peace, both spiritually and physically. This verse beautifully captures the essence of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. "But he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds, we are healed." It highlights Jesus' willingness to bear our physical and emotional afflictions, offering healing and restoration to all who believe in Him. This verse reflects the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 53:4, which speaks of Jesus' redemptive work on the cross. "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases." Bible Verses Related to Healing and Restoration: Many Christian artists are inspired by their own encounters with God's healing or witnessing the transformation and restoration of others around them. Īfter absorbing short-wavelength light, there is a short interval of time when the crystal lattice of ruby is in an excited state before fluorescence occurs. The chromium concentration in artificial rubies can be adjusted (in the crystal growth process) to be ten to twenty times less than in the natural gemstones. Additionally, absorption at any of the above wavelengths stimulates fluorescent emission of 694-nanometer-wavelength red light, which adds to its red color and perceived luster. If one percent of the aluminium ions are replaced by chromium in ruby, the yellow-green absorption results in a red color for the gem. Note the two broad violet and yellow-green absorption bands and one narrow absorption band at the wavelength of 694 nm, which is the wavelength of the ruby laser. Transmittance of ruby in optical and near-IR spectra. Those energy differences correspond to absorption in the ultraviolet, violet, and yellow-green regions of the spectrum. The octahedral arrangement of the O 2− ions is distorted, and the energy levels of the different orbitals of those Cr 3+ ions are slightly altered because of the directions to the O 2− ions. However, the Cr 3+ ions are larger and have electron orbitals in different directions than aluminium. When a chromium atom replaces an occasional aluminium atom, it too loses 3 electrons to become a chromium 3+ ion to maintain the charge balance of the Al 2O 3 crystal. The substitution density of Cr 3+ ions in this model is approximately 2%, approximating the maximum doping normally encountered. Sapphire, ruby, and pure corundum are α-alumina, the most stable form of Al 2O 3, in which 3 electrons leave each aluminium ion to join the regular octahedral group of six nearby O 2− ions in pure corundum this leaves all of the aluminium ions with a very stable configuration of no unpaired electrons or unfilled energy levels, and the crystal is perfectly colorless, and transparent except for flaws.Ĭrystal structure of ruby showing the substitution of Al 3+ ions (blue) with Cr 3+ (red). Among the natural gems, only moissanite and diamond are harder, with diamond having a Mohs hardness of 10.0 and moissanite falling somewhere in between corundum (ruby) and diamond in hardness. Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Physical properties Crystal structure of rubies The world's most valuable ruby to be sold at auction is the Sunrise Ruby. Ruby is the traditional birthstone for July and is usually pinker than garnet, although some rhodolite garnets have a similar pinkish hue to most rubies. After color follows clarity: similar to diamonds, a clear stone will command a premium, but a ruby without any needle-like rutile inclusions may indicate that the stone has been treated. The brightest and most valuable shade of red, called blood-red or pigeon blood, commands a large premium over other rubies of similar quality. The quality of a ruby is determined by its color, cut, and clarity, which, along with carat weight, affect its value. Some gemstones that are popularly or historically called rubies, such as the Black Prince's Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown, are actually spinels. The color of a ruby is due to the element chromium. The word ruby comes from ruber, Latin for red. Ruby is one of the traditional cardinal gems, alongside amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and diamond. Other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires. Ruby is one of the most popular traditional jewelry gems and is very durable.
